OPEN CALL

Feature Creep is seeking submissions from artists, writers, musicians, game makers, and all other types of creatives, in works of any and every medium, which speak to or engage with the genre of .Hypermodern Horror.. Submitted works will be included in the steadily growing Feature Creep Archive, where they can operate in conversation with other works in this expanding genre.

To submit work, please send either a Mac compatible file of the work you’d like to submit, or a link to the work, (please ensure that the privacy/security settings allow us access) along with the following:

1) A 250-750 Word Creator Bio, including your education (either formal or informal), your professional/exhibition experience (if any) as well as any other information about yourself that you feel is relevant to your submission, such as background, lived experience, or communities that you are a part of.

2) A 250-750 Word Contextualizing Statement about the work which includes any information required to fully engage with it, as well as your reasons for submitting specifically to Feature Creep, and how you feel the work fits into the Hypermodern Horror genre.

3) Contact information, including an email address, name (if submitting as a group or collective, please include both the group name and the individual names of each member) as well as any other relevant information, such as your pronouns.

PLEASE NOTE: This call is not open to works produced using so-called Generative AI. This site has featured works in the past which have used AI in order to critique AI and the cultural elements behind it, which we felt was a reasonable trade-off at the time, but with a fuller understanding of the harms this technology is rooted in, we will be adopting a strict no AI policy going forward.

Optional Themes: MILLENNIAL TRASH and BLANK SCREENS

While the call is open to any work which falls under the broad horror umbrella, applicants are welcomed to engage with one of two optional themes – as a source of inspiration, a point of entry into the application process, or just for fun. Our optional themes are:

MILLENNIAL TRASH – This theme is equally interested in the shambling corpse of millennial culture and the literal junkheaps of the world, filled to the brim with the detritus of our recent pasts. As ever-more-putrid nostalgia continues to metastasize in the valves of our corporate content engines, literal garbage from the last several decades (most of it owing to the so-called first world) crusts over more and more of the earth’s lands and seas. What is deemed worthy of reclamation, and what is discarded as mere garbage? Whose treasure is whose trash, and who is left to pick through it? Can nostalgia operate in a radical mode, or is it inherently regressive? And, perhaps most importantly of all, am I cringe?

BLANK SCREENS – Can the digital possess negative space? Is absence possible at all anymore in our world of constant (tele)presence and infinite (re)production? Do the missed call, the dropped signal, or the freshly wiped drive still hold power? If so, whose? This theme is for those intrigued by the quiet behind the screen, or the radical potential of stillness in a world of constant movement. For those who embrace disconnection, but want to log off without checking out, or giving in to anti-technological impulses. What is seen in a blank screen?
